We are noticing something though. There is very little difference between all the churches we have visited. Its the same style songs, the same style building, the same.......well everything. They are carbon copies right down to the free latte. Now the messages have been drastically different, but is that it? Is that all that defines a church's identity? Is it all just about who stands in the pulpit or could there be more?
I hate dropping all my kids off with different well meaning strangers each week and tensing up as I listen to yet another team do their own interpretation of hillsong. Hillsong is nice, but it loses its luster after the 3rd or 4th rendition of Hosanna. Are we really singing all the same songs in every church across the country? Are there any worship pastors out there who are writing their own music or looking for something a little more unique than the christian radio top ten?
I guess I don't even know what I am looking for. I think that if I find it I will definitely know. I think Dan will know too and we will both have this confirming moment of agreement. It hasn't happened yet and I am tired of being a first time visitor. I am tired of the great parking spot, free coffee, and stalker card. I don't want anyone to contact me or call me. If I like you I will be back. Let my people call your people. Otherwise thanks, but we will be moving on.
I am still hopeful that schlepping my kids all over town each Sunday will bring some positive results. I know a place is out there for us. If you think you know of such a place leave me a comment. Who knows, maybe our new church is looking for us just as hard as we are looking for them.

booo. (tiny boo) At least a small church has room for growth in every area (not talking numbers) but if you're gonna start a church it makes sense to start with a basic floor model. As time goes on, the church can evolve more organically...at least I hope. Youre welcome to come to our house church on fridays;) we offer free coffee AND dessert!
My suggestion would be....allow God to minister to you when you go to church. Maybe you are supposed to be taking some time off from serving for a season. Try not to think about how you would change the worship and let the worship minister to you. If you kinda like a place you might not know after one visit, if it's a fit. Most of all, remember, church is about Jesus. If He is showing up there, you're gonna be OK. :)
I agree with anonymous...It is hardly giving a church a chance if you only go 1 time.
I also agree....whenever our focus is on ourselves and what we are getting or not getting out of a service/church...no church will ever be good enough. there is a church meant just for you...I have learned its not about us and Church is about being used and I know that God has a specific place for every one. As long as you focus on "where does my tithe belong and where can I be used?" It is in our Giving that we grow the most :)
